In a corner of Menard Park near the Galveston Seawall there were three city workers framing a small concrete foundation.
They were building a monument to the memory of Riley Ann Sawyers.
Meanwhile, the cross for Riley still stands on the island where she was found.
Still, her grandmother wanted another reminder somewhere in the city and that's why a park bench with a plaque was built.
It will be dedicated Thursday on the one year anniversary of the day Riley died.
“I still get emotional, extremely, and I wanted something here for them, said Riley’s grandmother Sheryl Sawyers.
Rileys’ grandmother and uncle want to offer the bench as a thank you to the people of Galveston.
She’s already placed one thank you back at Riley’s cemetery in Ohio. Riley’s picture and an angel are engraved on the front of that creation.
And “Baby Grace” as Galveston first knew her, engraved on the back.
“Well, the people of Texas, I felt like I was coming home to an old friend. You know, they’ve been wonderful,” said Riley’s grandmother.
As for the park bench in Galveston, it will sit next to a playground.
on purpose.
“The children that are here, the families, the mothers and fathers that come here that can be reminded of this and just hold their children a little bit closer,” said Cheryl Lawless with Texas Equusearch.
“The bench is in her honor, but it’s also to keep out there, people to be aware of child abuse, neglect and it couldn’t be a better spot,” said Sawyers.
To Sheryl and her Family, hope all is going well and your enjoyin
